God says, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” John 14:15. God’s will is in His word, His commandments. In the new covenant, God writes His commandments in my heart. These commandments are not dependent on my outward circumstances. In this way, whether I am married or single, no matter where I work or live—obeying God’s word, His commandments, is the most important thing in my life.
People have different skills, different types of work, and different circumstances. But whatever my situation is, I have my own will that goes against God’s word. God is looking for people who love Him so much that they obey Him instead of doing their own will.
Naturally, it is easy to be so busy with what I am physically doing that I forget to obey God’s commandments. For example, God commands me to not be “bitter or angry or mad. Never shout angrily or say things to hurt others …” Ephesians 4:31 (NCV). Whether I am doing construction, work in a restaurant, or am a nurse in a hospital, if I get angry with my co-worker in the middle of it, I am no longer doing God’s will.
God’s will for me is that I become free from the sin in my human nature, my own will, and that I in each situation follow the commandments He writes in my heart. “Be kind and loving to each other, and forgive each other …” Ephesians 4:32 (NCV). It’s not in my human nature to do that, but God has commanded me to live like this. God’s will for me is a life where sin has no power over me!
It is impossible to do God’s will in my own power, but when my whole heart’s desire is to obey His will instead of my own, He is there, and He gives me power to do His will!
