After Jesus rose from the dead and went to heaven, the disciples came together in a large house in Jerusalem. Suddenly they heard a loud noise from heaven, like a strong wind, and it filled the whole house. The disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and received great power. Just think about Peter who, not long before that, had denied that he knew Jesus. Now he stood in Jerusalem and spoke boldly about Jesus. What he said was so convincing that 3,000 people were converted that same day. (Acts 2.)
On that day, Peter became a new person. He suddenly became bold. He had received the Holy Spirit as a powerful “engine” inside him. We read in Romans 8:14,15 (NCV), “The true children of God are those who let God's Spirit lead them. The Spirit we received does not make us slaves again to fear; it makes us children of God. With that Spirit we cry out, ‘Father’."
We can use the example of a car. Cars have engines to drive them forward, not only on easy roads, but also up steep hills. The Holy Spirit is exactly the same – it is like a powerful engine. Before a Christian has received the Holy Spirit, you can compare him to a car without an engine. He finds it difficult to be bold and to speak of Jesus. He doesn’t have a driving force in his Christian life. It seems like others have to push him to do anything.
If you would like to have a powerful “engine” inside of you, follow Peter’s instructions: He says that the Holy Spirit is given to all those who obey God. (Acts 5:32.) If you want to live a bold, overcoming Christian life, try this! Obey the Bible verses you know. Then you will be filled with the Holy Spirit. Even if you meet “steep hills” in your life, this powerful engine will drive the car up and over the top of the hill. You will progress and become unstoppable.
