God is our Creator and Leader. His will, as it was revealed through Jesus Christ, is never outdated or old-fashioned. God’s eternal promises are just as true and relevant today as they have always been.
“If you follow your selfish desires, you will harvest destruction, but if you follow the Spirit [God’s will], you will harvest eternal life.” Galatians 6:8 (CEV). If you leave the way of Godly fear, you will soon wander around in the darkness of your own mind. Then you can believe that what you thought, said, or did was the right thing to do or say, while you were actually going against God and His will.
It is arrogant and dangerous to think like this. You place yourself and your own thoughts above God’s thoughts. The reason for this is often because you fear what people will think. You give in to present-day attitudes and ways of thinking. Humanism replaces God’s laws. Arrogance replaces humility and you think you know better than the Bible. When someone tells you that that’s not right, you say, “You mustn’t judge!” But you do not realise that you often judge and criticise those who want to obey God’s word.
In Romans chapters 1 to 3, we read how wretched we are according to our fallen human nature. This is because people began to worship the creation rather than the Creator (Romans 1:25). Paul came to the following conclusion: “They don’t know where to find peace. They have no fear of God at all.” Romans 3:17-18 (NLT).
When people lack Godly fear, it can easily lead to a hard, unbending form of Christianity, and a self-satisfied life with no spiritual growth but full of criticism for their fellow men.
True Godly fear will always be “modern”, it will always be relevant for our present time. It has eternal promises. It’s written that Godly fear is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 1:7). It is wisdom to love and worship God and do His will.
Godly fear makes us people who can resist the worldly way of thinking. Godly fear makes us active and full of energy, people who stand on the foundation of truth as it is written in God’s Word. Godly fear makes us into compassionate and self-sacrificing people who work to help and be good to our fellow men.
